Background for Primer discussion

We currently have a primer page which includes some resources provided by Geoffrey Fox and some links.

These questions are provided by Geoffrey Fox as discussion points for the workshop:

  1. What actually is an Ontology -- e.g. when is a bunch of RDF specifications not an Ontology? What am I doing if I use RDF to specify properties (using perhaps Annotation tools) and then interpret properties in a nifty python program
  2. How far can one go by just using "triple" in RDF and ignoring rest in RDF RDFS DAML OWL ...
  3. Which of the tools actually work in various areas: annotation, access/storage/search etc.
  4. What are good ways for fresh applications to get started

This outline of "Semantic Grid 101" is provided by Mark Baker for discussion (also in Word):

  1. Semantic Grid vision
  2. What are the characteristics?
  3. Examples of possible semantic Grid applications.
  4. How it works it will all work
  5. What technologies are involved:
    1. What are the key technologies, what's on the periphery?
    2. What tools exist to help get started / keep going?
  6. What are the emerging standards?
  7. Which organisation(s) is/are supporting & controlling it? (Why do they make it a stable trustworthy platform?)
  8. Is the Semantic Grid sufficient for scientific users using Grid? or, is it just for general users?
  9. What are the issues and challenges in the context of Grid?
  10. What are the possible research topics?
  11. Who will use it? (who are the possible suppliers and consumers?)
  12. Is there a roadmap, and how far along it is everyone?

This posting from Yuzhong Qu on the Semantic Grid mailing list is also a basis for discussion:
