Panel: Grid meets Semantic Web: The Semantic Grid? Two dimensions: computation and semantics More computation: Web --> Grid More semantics: Web --> Semantic Web More of both: Web --> Semantic Grid. Questions: 1. what is relationship between grid and semantic Web? 2. what does grid have to offer semantic Web? 3. What does Semantic Web have to offer the grid? Some insightful views from Carol Goble, she sees grid as metadata-based middlware. The semantic Web gives abilty to reason with metadata. Idea: let's leverage metadata work being done in Semantic Web context. Grid: generation1: protocol based,. generation 2: service based Semantic grid is knowledge management. * semantic Web part of grid vision, latter more encompassing In Carol's experience, many customers are using XML, but they do not "give a stuff about RDF". Mainly they got scared by how appallingly ugly it is. Major screwup by the RDF geeks who think and dream in angle brackets, they forget that normal people can't understand rdf syntax. Carol made a good point that customers should NEVER be shown raw RDF. No, they should see something more readable. Just like programmers like to see programing languages, not machine code. I could not agree more. in 99.9 % of the talks at this conference, there is no need for raw RDF, it is always hard to understand. It is ludicrous. But they carry on... Jim Hendler: is concerned that the two areas, grid, and semantic Web are diverging. Grid mainly for scientists, a tiny percentage of Web community. He wants to put grid to work for common person. * personal collaborative filtering-(millions of people times thousands of items) * personal reasoning engines across semantics of billions of pages * My CYC - my own comonsense view of the world * "friend of a friend" Web of trust.see 3.1.2 below for more information. Miscellaneous Comments: * two relatively immature technologies. Try to bring together a good idea, but maybe too early? * The Grid is the futuere of the Internet, not the Web! * Carol: data-intensive computing just as important as computing-intensive computing. Grid started with linking together super-computers, now evolving to data intensive computing. * What is the biggest challenge we must address to realize the semantic grid? o understanding what the semantic grid is, wehre semantic Web meets grid. This is the first main challenge is. After we sort this, then things should flow. o what is minimum simplest thing to get a working semantic grid demonstrated? KISS principle * hard to do the vision thing, partly I want to start building things, feed off of each other, avoid divergence. Need deeper thinking about what good it will be, how will it change the world? Hard to do.
